YIT TO IMPLEMENT FOUR ENERGY-EFFICIENT LIFECYCLE-BASED DAY CARE CENTRES IN PORVOO, FINLAND

YIT and the City of Porvoo have signed a contract for the implementation of four day care centres based on the life cycle approach in Finland. YIT will be responsible for the Aurinkopelto, Omenatarha, Ylä-Haikkoo and Peiponpesä day care centres' design, construction, energy solutions and property maintenance services and energy consumption for 20 years. The total estimated construction cost of the day care centres is EUR 11 million.

The new centres will cater to approximately 360 children. The day care centres and their environment have easy-access walkways, and they are inspiring and safe. The day care group facility solutions are modifiable, which enables diverse use and possible changes in the future for other purposes. Construction will begin this autumn and the first users will enter the centres in late summer 2012.

"The Ylähaikkoo day care centre, with six day care groups, will be completed first. The Omenantarha day care centre will be completed by the end of 2012. The last two centres will be completed in August 2013," says Börje Boström, Facility Director of the City of Porvoo.

Lifecycle approach for safety and reliability

The four day care centres to be built in Porvoo are among the first ones in Finland to be implemented through the lifecycle approach. The reason for selecting the lifecycle approach is to ensure that the day care centres stay in good condition and are available at all times. Systematic maintenance and repairs will ensure that the facilities remain safe and healthy for the users. The day care centres will be connected to YIT’s property control room, providing 24/7 monitoring of conditions and energy consumption. The City of Porvoo will not suffer from unexpected costs or repair debt, as YIT will be responsible for all of the construction- and maintenance-related risks of the lifecycle project for 20 years.

"We want to contribute to the development of the lifecycle approach. YIT's know-how covers all of the lifecycle, from design and implementation to maintenance. We can also utilise our previous experience from other lifecycle projects, such as the Huhtasuo school and day care centre implemented in Jyväskylä," says Hannu Soikkeli, Project Development Manager at YIT.

Design based on energy-efficiency

The energy-efficiency goals set by the City of Porvoo will be met in the lifecycle-based day care centres through building planning and technical solutions. The day care centres almost fall under the passive energy category as a result of structural solutions, underfloor heating, the combination of terrestrial heat and solar collectors, LED technology and motion detectors used in the lighting, and presence-based ventilation. In addition to energy efficiency, the design emphasises indoor air quality as well as user safety and comfort.
