YIT SIGNS CONTRACTS TO DELIVER PIPELINE COLLECTION SYSTEMS FOR WASTE IN THE JÄTKÄSAARI AND KALASATAMA AREAS IN HELSINKI, FINLAND
YIT Kiinteistötekniikka Oy, Kalasataman jätteen putkikeräys Oy and Jätkäsaaren jätteen putkikeräys Oy, the latter two owned by the City of Helsinki, have today signed contracts for pipeline collection systems for waste to be realised in new residential areas in Kalasatama and Jätkäsaari. The value of the investments will be around EUR 80 million and maintenance around EUR 20 million.
YIT will design and construct automatic Envac pipeline collection systems for waste for the areas and will be responsible for their care and maintenance after implementation. The investments will be realised 2012–2030 as the construction of the areas proceeds, and the maintenance period will be about 20 years from the completion of the investments. The installation work will begin in Jätkäsaari in July and the system is estimated to be in use in 2012. The Kalasatama system will be in use in 2014.
The assessed amount of waste to be collected with the pipeline collection system is about 6,900 tonnes in Jätkäsaari per year, equalling almost 19 tonnes per day, and 7,500 tonnes in Kalasatama, 21 tonnes per day. The system collects four different waste types: mixed waste, biowaste, recyclable paper and recyclable board. The pipeline collection system will include approximately 165 waste collection points in Jätkäsaari and 180 in Kalasatama. To make waste sorting easier, each waste collection point has separate inlet points for all waste types. The waste collection points are inside buildings or in yard areas along access routes.
There will be in total approximately 10 kilometres of waste collection pipes in Jätkäsaari and 13 kilometres in Kalasatama. Waste will be transported in the pipelines at the longest stretch of two kilometres to a station where each waste type is directed to a waste container reserved for it. Waste trucks will fetch full waste containers of 30 cubic metres from the station, which significantly reduces the waste management traffic in the area.
“As the market leader of our field in Finland, we have brought a world-class solution for the pipeline transport of municipal waste to our country. The Envac system is an environmentally friendly, safe and energy-saving solution for residential areas. Helsinki is the first city in Finland to implement this advanced system to such a large extent,” says Managing Director Jarno Hacklinfrom YIT Kiinteistötekniikka Oy (Building Services, Finland).
The pipeline collection system will enhance the safety and comfort of the residential areas and facilitate waste recycling. Much of the waste transport in the residential area can be eliminated, which will reduce traffic volumes and emissions, improve the safety of yards and facilitate their maintenance. Hygienic, odour-free and noise-free waste management will improve the pleasantness of the environment.
YIT brought the Envac waste collection system to Finland in 2004 and is responsible for the engineering, installation and maintenance of the Envac systems. Swedish Envac has been manufacturing vacuum waste collection systems since the 1960s. The systems are commonly used in airports, hospitals, residential areas and commercial centres, for example, in many European countries.
