LEMMINKÄINEN CORPORATION PRESS RELEASE 15 JANUARY 2013 AT 4 P.M
AWARD FOR CIVIL ENGINEERING ACHIEVEMENT FOR THE BUILDERS OF P-HÄMPPI
Lemminkäinen and other builders of P-Hämppi were awarded the prize for civil engineering achievement of the year (Vuoden Y-Teko) in a regional earthwork event on Tuesday. The prize is awarded by a cooperation group for civil engineering in the Tampere Region called Pirkanmaan yhdyskuntatekniikan yhteistyöryhmä PYRY. Completed last autumn, P-Hämppi is an underground parking facility for 950 cars in the heart of the city of Tampere.
"The prize is a sign of successful cooperation between several project participants," says Vice President Risto Kupila, Lemminkäinen. Lemminkäinen was in charge of excavations and building the parking facility, as two separate contracts. Underground construction is one of Lemminkäinen's key areas of expertise. Lemminkäinen developed an innovative excavation solution for P-Hämppi: a bridge was built inside the tunnel, using a bored pile foundation. This sped up the project by more than a year. Developed by Martti Keskinen, Development Manager at Lemminkäinen, the innovation reduced the disturbances caused by the construction work. It was also the reason why the inhabitants of Tampere had an exceptionally positive attitude towards the project.
The construction of the P-Hämppi parking facility forms part of the development of central Tampere, catering well to the parking needs in the city centre. The partly two-level parking facility is easy to use. Its life cycle is estimated to extend to over a hundred years. The development of underground parking in city centres reduces above-ground parking and the need to construct above-ground parking garages.
The client for the P-Hämppi project was Finnpark. A-Insinöörit Rakennuttaminen Oy was responsible for supervision in the project, and the underground parking facility was designed by Saanio & Riekkola Oy with Aihio Arkkitehdit Oy. Lemminkäinen was responsible for excavating the parking facility. Almost the same team forms the consortium, which is responsible for the design and construction of the VT12 Tampere tunnel.
