YIT wins tender to build parking facility in Espoo, Finland
YIT has been selected to build a new parking facility in Suviniitty, central Espoo, Finland. The project is valued at EUR 8 million. Construction is due to commence in February with completion expected in summer 2017. YIT’s partner for the project is Caverion.
The project will be carried out as a Design & Build. Bidders were ranked on both price and quality. Quality was weighted at 40 per cent and price at 60 per cent. YIT’s proposal won full marks for all quality indicators; technical quality, functionality, architectural design and risk management.
“The design and build approach is a great fit with YIT. When you use quality as a marker to evaluate the bids, it is possible to ensure an end result that is sustainable, aesthetically appropriate and of first rate quality. It also challenges the bidders to look for new solutions in planning, implementation and maintenance,” Petri Saarinen, Head of construction management at YIT explained.
The City of Espoo is bringing development into Suviniitty. In the city plan, land in the area has been zoned for residential properties and services for thousands of new residents. The parking facility now in the pipeline forms part of Suviniitty’s centralised parking solution that also comprises civilian shelters as well as facilities for rooftop gardening. The car park is due to offer capacity for around 240 spaces. The shelter can offer emergency accommodation for more than 1,100, some of which has been ring fenced for staff and pupils at Kirkkojärvi school. When not in use, the shelters will provide facilities for a wide range of activities.
Project brief highlighted emphasis on quality and urban architectural aesthetic
“The competition set out to draw on the expertise of the bidders in order to discover and build a parking facility and civilian emergency shelter that are cost-effective, life-cycle cost-effective and aligned with Espoo’s other strategic goals. The competition was a great success and now it’s time for YIT to deliver on their promise. Judging by the progress so far, I expect good things from this project,” said Kimmo Martinsen, Head of Construction Unit at Espoo’s Premises Department commented.
“The new parking facility will kick start the development at Suviniitty, which is due to see the construction of thousands of residential units in the coming years. What we want is for the area’s first ever building to set the standard for high-quality construction going forward,” Mikko Kivinen, Project Manager for central Espoo, added.
YIT’s proactive approach to innovation and their focus on parking facilities, is yielding results. Currently, YIT are in the process of building a car park above a metro station at Jousenpuisto in Espoo and an underground facility at Töölönkatu, both with capacity for 800. In total, YIT’s current car park projects comprise space for more than 2,000 cars.
