The circular economy brick won the Finland Chamber of Commerce's Sustainability Deed of the Year award
YIT Corporation Press release 12 April 2022 at 10:00 a.m.
YIT has started the renovation of the Maistraatinportti property in Länsi-Pasila, Helsinki. The old Otavamedia business centre, located right next to Tripla, will be completely renovated, including the facade, and will provide approximately 12,200 m2 of office space for rent. At the same time, the property will be converted from a single-user office building to a multi-user building. The building will be completed in autumn 2023.
Maistraatinportti will be renovated honoring the original, personal architecture designed by architect Ilmo Valjakka. In particular, the renovation will take advantage of the design solutions regarding the building’s brightness and beautiful style. The central location in the heart of Pasila offers excellent transport connections and a wide range of services in the Mall of Tripla, the largest shopping and service centre in the Nordic countries, developed by YIT.
The renovation will be carried out in line with the principles of sustainable development*. Renovating an old building is a more environmentally friendly option than building a new one. A baseline carbon footprint is calculated for the building. After the renovation, a new calculation will be carried out, aiming for a 30% lower carbon footprint compared to the baseline. The design takes into account low-carbon aspects such as building materials, insulation, heating and life-cycle maintenance of the building. The intelligent technical building systems will enable district cooling, energy-saving lighting control and presence sensors regulating ventilation, and an application for gold-level LEED certification will be submitted.
"At Maistraatinportti, instead of just renovating the building, we are creating a working environment that supports well-being at work and designing the facilities together with our customers according to their current hybrid work needs. The good location allows users to experience a smooth everyday life, but also a smaller carbon footprint, as they can get to work by public transport, bike or on foot. Electric vehicles have also been taken into account," says Tuula Klemetti, Sales Director at YIT.
Renovation is an essential part of YIT's strategic and circular economy objectives. Another YIT renovation project, the Vallila Teleport on Teollisuuskatu, is located about one kilometre from Maistraatinportti, opposite the Konepaja area. Both projects are located in the business region of Pasila/Vallila/Kalasatama, a strong focal point of development for the City of Helsinki as well.
