Professionals in the field of engineering ranked YIT as the most attractive employer in the construction industry in the Universum Professionals Survey. According to the Universum Student Survey published in May, YIT was the most ideal employer in the construction industry for the second consecutive year.

This year, YIT has established itself as the most ideal employer in the construction industry for students and professionals. The company concentrates on operating as a competent project development partner, contractor of demanding projects and builder of good living environments. This requires a high level of versatile competences.

“Building a functional and sustainable living environment requires a vision, ethics and perseverance. We want to be proud of our projects years after their completion. We have a great number of huge, diverse projects. Therefore, we need wide-ranging skills from financing, zoning, planning and production all the way to environmental competences, commercial concepting and services. Listening to and understanding the customer, coordinating professionals from different fields and involving people as well as clear leadership are key factors. We will also emphasise these in the future,” says Pii Raulo, Senior Vice President, Human Resources.

In the Helsinki metropolitan area alone, our professionals’ contribution can be seen in several large-scale projects. For example, the Konepaja district construction in Vallila will be completed early next year, the first street sections of the Jokeri Light Rail combining Helsinki and Espoo are almost ready and the Vuosaari Upper Secondary School is being built using the PPP model.

In addition to the internal HR development, YIT invests strongly in the newcomers of the field. This year, nearly 800 summer job positions were offered to students, regardless of the COVID-19 pandemic. Health and safety issues were carefully reviewed during the orientation arranged separately for the trainees. According to the feedback, 97% of summer trainees would recommend YIT as an employer.

Engineering professionals appreciate the competitive base salary, variety of assignments and flexible working conditions

In the Professionals Survey, the most important job characteristics for the engineering respondents were a competitive base salary, variety of assignments and flexible working conditions. A friendly work environment and respect for its people came in next. The engineering respondents felt that their strengths were especially problem-solving skills, responsibility and adaptability. The respondents felt that trust plays a key role in whether they, as professionals, want to commit to their employer.

“We believe and invest in our skilful professionals, since their skills help us succeed in our challenging projects. At the same time, we want to respond to the career-related expectations of the professionals, offer opportunities for continuous development and create a working environment that supports their well-being. When competences and the right people come together, excellent results can be expected. For example, our renovation project at the University of Helsinki won the Construction Site of the Year 2020 award last week and our hybrid project Mall of Tripla in Pasila won the same award in 2018,” says Pii Raulo.

A total of 7,000 people responded to the Universum Professionals Survey, of which 1,300 were engineering professionals. Most of the results were collected before the exceptional circumstances caused by COVID-19.
