YIT IS CONSTRUCTING A FURTHER EXTENSION PHASE OF THE TURKU UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL

On 15 June 2010, YIT and the Hospital District of Southwest Finland signed an agreement on the implementation of phase 2 of the extension of the Turku University Hospital. The agreed interior construction phase will be implemented as a project management contract, its value totalling about EUR 45 million. The contract covers the interior construction work in the E, F and G parts of the T hospital. The construction of the T hospital will be completed in December 2012.
YIT has been involved in implementing frame contracting for the T hospital and also acts as the electrical and sprinkler contractor at the site. The total value of YIT's work at the site amounts to EUR 70 million.

The total area of the extension of the T-hospital is more than 60,000 gross square metres. The new premises will be taken into use after the hospital has provided its operational equipment in the spring of 2013. The premises will house the hospital's heavy and acute operations, including joint emergency duties. The intention is also to introduce better, more flexible and more patient-oriented operating models together with the new premises.

“The extensive construction work will include an added challenge in terms of securing operations in the premises in hospital use in all situations. YIT, which is currently carrying out frame contracts for the building, was also selected as the main contractor for the largest interior construction phase for the extension project. We have been satisfied with our cooperation and YIT has kept its schedules well, in accordance with the contract agreements,” says Timo Seppälä, project manager of the Hospital District of Southwest Finland.

SIGNIFICANT IMPACT ON REGIONAL EMPLOYMENT

The construction work for the extension of the T hospital has a significant impact on employment in the area. The YIT construction site will employ up to about 400 people.

“We are very happy that we will continue cooperation in this project in terms of the interior construction work as well. With regard to labour, the contract is significant to our unit. We, for our part, will also be able to have an impact on employment in the sector,” says Jyrki Meri, the area manager for YIT's Building Construction.
