LARGE ORDER FOR YIT WHEN LKAB INCREASES THE MINING ACTIVITY IN KIRUNA

YIT received a contracting order of over EUR 7 million (SEK 71 million) when LKAB invests around EUR 1.2 billion (SEK 12 billion) in a new mine level. The contracting work consists of pump and pipe installations in pumping stations, pipe installations in basins and in bore holes including mounting of valves in and out of the holes. The project will be realized between May 2010 and July 2011 and the production start for the new mine level is planned for autumn 2011.
About 20 persons from YIT will work with this project in two shifts and 7 days a week.

- Our customer LKAB is about to invest in a new mine level in order to increase its yearly delivery of ore. We are very glad and proud to have been entrusted to realize this contracting project. This kind of project attracts a lot of competitors in Sweden as well as internationally, says Andreas Lundqvist, region manager north, YIT Sweden.

A challenge in the project is that the work is being performed 1,000 metres underground. The project involves specific type of installation, by its size and shape of installations, which increases the importance of planning and product choices.

Many of the parts and tools used in this installation are special parts manufactured in YIT´s own workshop in Finland. This workshop has a capacity to handle bigger materials and larger pipe dimensions. This is also where products from other suppliers are adapted and where special forging parts, used to attach installations on, for example, the rock walls and roofs are produced.

YIT was the contracting partner when one of the world's biggest underground mines, KP90 in Kiruna, was constructed, with very good results. It has been used as a reference site for LKAB and is one of the reasons YIT has been entrusted this new contract with LKAB.

- Within YIT we have a very good experience and the competence needed for these kinds of projects. We also have a high experience working with LKAB. They know us very well thanks to our local position in Kiruna and they have confidence in the work we deliver, says Lundqvist.
