The Travel and Service Centre is an integral part of the Five-Star City Centre development programme in Tampere. Tampere city centre will be significantly reformed by 2030.
Finnpark has selected YIT as its partner for developing and implementing the Tampere Travel and Service Centre owned by it.
Companies will next begin to work on a functional concept for the area, which is situated in the address Rautatienkatu 25–27 in the heart of Tampere, as well as the related block and design solutions, which can be utilised in the zoning and project development phase.
According to preliminary draft plans, two apartment tower buildings, two residential multi-staircase slab blocks as well as business and office premises masses to be located in the buildings have been planned for the Travel and Service Centre area, making up a broad hybrid project. Zoning change projects for the area will be advanced and controlled by the City of Tampere.
YIT and Finnpark aim at developing an effective, implementable overall concept for the area, which especially takes account of the customer perspective as well as the role of the Travel and Service Centre in the city structure.
”The Travel and Service Centre is a very important project for Finnpark Oy and the City of Tampere. There are high hopes or the project. It is great to have an actor in the project who has evidence about corresponding large-scale projects as well as the required expertise for development,” says Antti Marttila, Managing Director of Finnpark.
The development work also involves looking at the concept, brand, customer needs, the project as part of the cityscape as well as the scope of the project, building masses, construction phasing and the impacts of railway planning on the project, for example.
”The Travel and Service Centre is an inspiring project for several reasons. “The project perfectly embodies YIT’s vision of more life in sustainable cities and the idea of a 15-minute city. At the same time, it definitely is a number one project in city development in terms of its location and development potential,” says Juha Kostiainen, Senior Vice President, Sustainable Urban Development, YIT Corporation.
The central location of the area also entails questions that need to be addressed. The project is located at a traffic hub in the immediate vicinity of the railway and involves high-rise construction. For the above reasons, special care must exercised in preliminary project planning, taking into consideration construction phasing and project limits.
The zoning phase of the Travel and Service Centre area is estimated to last until spring 2022. Construction work in the area could commence in 2023 at the earliest.
Tampere city centre will be significantly reformed by 2030, and the Travel and Service Centre is part of this vision. Apartments for 15,000 people will be implemented in the city centre. According to the vision for the near future, the city centre will be the driver of industrial life, act as a focal point for events and experiences, lie within easy reach and enjoy an international image. The area will house a new workplace area and a hub for public transport
