YIT to build Otaniemi station for the West Metro, in Espoo, Finland

YIT Construction Ltd and Länsimetro Oy have agreed on a building contract for the Otaniemi station for the West Metro in Espoo, Finland. The total value of the contract is EUR 29.4 million. The contract covers the construction of the Otaniemi station building, including its outdoor areas, a technical shaft, and the underground tunnel station and service tunnels. The construction of the station will be started in July 2013 and is to be completed in September 2015. The aim is that all West Metro (Länsimetro) stations will be opened at the same time in the end of 2015.

“We can extensively utilise our expertise in facilities and infrastructure in the construction of the Otaniemi metro station. Demanding contracts emphasise the diverse competence of our personnel so that we can flexibly utilise our resources and operating models at various work stages. We have already successfully applied our expertise to, for example, the construction of the Ring Road stations,” says Anne Piiparinen, Director of the Construction Engineering Unit.

Previously, YIT has performed excavation contracts for Länsimetro stations, as well as rail and access tunnels. Currently, excavation contracts for the Keilaniemi station and rail tunnel, and the Niittykumpu station, rail and access tunnels are in progress. Four previous excavation contracts (the tunnel passing under the Lauttasaari strait, and the eastern Tapiola as well as Matinkylä and Otaniemi access tunnels) have already been completed.

With Länsimetro project the metro traffic in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area is set to continue from Ruoholahti in Helsinki to Matinkylä in Espoo, 13.9 kilometres towards West. Providing employment for thousands, Finland's largest infrastructure project comprises, for example, seven new stations, two tunnels each nearly 14 kilometres in length and the removal of around three million cubic metres of blasted rock.
