YIT starts the construction of the Salvia building in the Meilahti hospital area in Helsinki

YIT and HUS Kiinteistöt Oy have signed an order on the construction phase of a new building, named Salvia building, and will start the construction work. The project was commissioned by HUS Group, the joint authority for Helsinki and Uusimaa and developed by HUS Kiinteistöt Oy, and it will be implemented in the Meilahti hospital area in Helsinki as Integrated Project Delivery. During the development phase, the contract's target budget was set at approximately 119 million euros, which will be recorded in YIT's order book for the first quarter of 2025.

The construction phase was preceded by a development phase lasting about a year, during which the scope of the project was defined. At this stage, the parking facility planned under the building had to be removed due to the mechanical characteristics of the rock on the construction site. The new building will include premises for Meilahti's pharmacy and central kitchen, and the scope of the project is approximately 24,000 gross square meters. The property will have three above-ground floors for operations and a ventilation machine room floor. The contract also encompasses the construction of the property's yard area. The new facilities will enable the centralization of pharmacy operations and the streamlining of pharmaceutical delivery and manufacturing processes.

"The collaborative project management contract was chosen as the project format since this has proved successful in our large investment projects. Involving the main contractor in the development phase as early as possible, as well as all parties working on the project, will bring the best result,” says Carl Sirén, Director of Construction Development from HUS Kiinteistöt Oy.

Particular attention has been paid to the property's carbon footprint, a significant part of which consists of the energy consumption of the property. An energy recycling system has been designed for the site, which significantly improves the building's energy efficiency.

"The Salvia building will provide HUS services with key support services, such as high-quality pharmaceutical care and nutrition services. The new modern facilities enable the improvement of the efficiency of the pharmacy and kitchen. Special attention is also paid to low-carbon choices in line with our strategic objectives. The Salvia building utilizes local renewable energy, such as geothermal and solar energy, and explores the possibility of using low-carbon building materials,” says Juha Tiuraniemi, CEO of HUS Kiinteistöt Group.

“It is great that we are now able to start the construction work for the project. The Salvia building will be located between the New Children's Hospital, the Park Hospital, the Service Center and the A wing of the Women’s Hospital. The new building is functionally and structurally connected to the nearby properties and underground facilities, and it requires the improvement of the load-bearing capacity of the deck structures of the tunnels running under the yard areas. In the development phase of the project, the measures required by the specific characteristics of the project were planned in seamless collaboration, which facilitates work in the implementation phase,” says VP Matti Sarikkola from YIT.

The construction of the Salvia building, which will replace the HUS’ old administrative building, will start in April, and the work is scheduled to be completed in spring 2029.
