The City of Espoo has selected YIT as the executor of the renovation and expansion project of Tapiola Swimming Hall. The agreement is scheduled to be signed after the city's procurement decision in April-May. During the project, all the premises of the Tapiola Swimming Hall as well as the outdoor areas will be repaired and partly built as a new structure. The City of Espoo and YIT will carry out the renovation of the swimming hall in close cooperation, respecting the original architectural layout of the swimming hall and bringing modern technology to the maintenance of the swimming hall's functions.
Preparations for the construction work will begin in May 2025, and according to preliminary estimates, the swimming pool will be completed in the spring of 2028. The value of the project for YIT is approximately EUR 35 million, which will be recorded in the order book of the second quarter of the year after the contract has been signed.
The design and implementation of the project takes into account the cityscape and architectural values of the Tapiola Swimming Hall, which are preserved in accordance with the conservation regulations of the Finnish Heritage Agency and the ELY Centre in connection with the construction. In the project, the 1965 swimming hall building will be repaired and built in accordance with the original look and, as an extension, new technical facilities and dressing rooms will be built. The window of the roof dome of the main pool hall will be preserved. The outdoor area and the extension building completed in 2005 will be repaired. During the project, efforts will also be made to minimize the environmental impact of the construction site, for example, by recycling materials as much as possible and taking into account their service life, reparability and environmental stress when selecting solutions.
"We are pleased that YIT has been selected as the main contractor for the project of the Tapiola Swimming Hall, which is of regional and cultural historical value. We look forward to the opportunity to make the swimming hall available to Espoo residents again in cooperation with the city. The starting point of the renovation and expansion project is to respect the original look of the swimming hall and bring in technology that meets current requirements. Due to the central location of the project, our goal is to work closely with the residents and communities in the area during the construction work ," said Aleksi Laine, Head of YIT's Infra segment.
"The Tapiola Swimming Hall is much more than a swimming hall, as it is an essential part of Tapiola's cultural environment, the value of which will improve even further with the renovation and construction of the swimming hall,” said Olli Isotalo, Director of Urban Environment in Espoo.
The Tapiola Swimming Hall, located near the Tapiola Central Pool, was completed in 1965 and was designed by architect Aarne Ervi as a significant part of the Tapiola Central Area and the cultural environment. The swimming pool has been out of use for the public since 2016.
