YIT has signed an agreement with the City of Kalajoki on the construction of the Merenoja comprehensive school. The school will be the first comprehensive school in Finland to carry the Nordic Swan Ecolabel. The project will be implemented as a turnkey contract consisting of demolition work on the old buildings and the construction of a new school building and sports facilities. Construction will begin in autumn 2018 and the interior parts will be completed in July 2020. Demolition and exterior work is scheduled to be completed by the end of October 2020 at latest. The value of the contract is approximately EUR 30 million and it will be entered in the order backlog for the third quarter of 2018.
The new Merenoja comprehensive and upper secondary school will be constructed as a new building at the school’s current location. The old school buildings will be demolished in two stages. In addition to teaching facilities for the comprehensive school, the new school will include additional space for the upper secondary school, a dental clinic, sports facilities and premises for the City of Kalajoki’s sports and recreation department. The school is designed for approximately 1,000 students and 100 employees. The total size of the project is about 13,000 gross m2, with the indoor gymnasium building representing 2,421 gross m2of this total.
“We are creating a modern learning environment in the city centre that is unique in Northern Finland in terms of its electiveness and internationality. The new comprehensive school and expanded upper secondary school will enable the expansion and development of Kalajoki Academy, which is the city’s unit in charge of leisure activities, sports and culture. We want the new school to be healthy, safe and energy-efficient. YIT’s tender was the best match with the price and quality criteria we had specified in the competitive bidding process,” says Jukka Puoskari, Mayor of Kalajoki.
“Examples of YIT’s previous projects of this nature include the Kastelli and Hiukkavaara multi-purpose buildings in Oulu, the timber school campus in Pudasjärvi and the Torkinmäki school in Kokkola. Having previously implemented various life-cycle and alliance projects, we have extensive experience in the best operating methods and technical solutions for school construction. We will take advantage of this expertise in implementing the Merenoja school,” says Esa Neuvonen, Executive Vice President, Business Premises at YIT.
The construction work will be carried out in accordance with the Kuivaketju10 dry chain management model related to moisture control and the requirements of the P1 construction cleanliness category. The building will feature a ventilated ground floor structure and a period of time has been set aside for ventilation in the project schedule before the facilities are commissioned for use.
The new school will be designed and constructed in compliance the Nordic Swan Ecolabel criteria. Nordic Swan Ecolabelled buildings must meet strict environmental standards related to, among other things, taking the building’s entire life-cycle into account and ensuring good indoor air quality.
