YIT has signed a project management contract with the City of Helsinki regarding the construction of the Helsinki Central Library in Helsinki, Finland. With a value of approximately EUR 50 million for YIT, the project will be started in late autumn 2016 after the earthworks and the basement’s concrete structure works have been completed. The library will be completed in autumn 2018.
The Central Library will have a central location near Helsinki Central Railway Station and a stretch of parkland known as Kansalaistori (literally, the ‘Citizens’ Plaza’.) With Arkkitehtitoimisto ALA Oy acting as the chief architect of the project, it will have a gross floor area of approximately 17,000 square metres. The site under construction will turn into a modern library, a meeting place for citizens and an energy-efficient building, constituting the latest supplement to the concentration of cultural architecture in the Töölönlahti area. The Central Library is one of the projects launched to mark the centenary of Finland’s independence.
With its modern structural solutions, the Central Library will be a versatile project with ambitious energy and material efficiency targets. The location of the construction site, central from the logistical perspective, will put a great spotlight on the contractor, which is why the tenders were evaluated not only from the perspective of the price aspects but also taking into account the qualitative criteria.
