YIT and Helsinki Region Environmental Services HSY have signed an agreement on the construction of a new underground wastewater treatment plant in Blominmäki, Espoo, Finland. The project will be carried out as a project management contract and its value is approximately EUR 206 million.  The project will be included in the order backlog in the first quarter of the year. Construction will begin in April 2018, and the wastewater treatment plant will be commissioned in 2021.

In addition to the construction of the wastewater treatment plant, YIT is responsible for the machinery, HVAC, automation and instrumentation work, as well as the electrical installation. The area of the new treatment plant will be about 10 hectares.

Once completed, the highly efficient plant will process the wastewater of about 400,000 people. According to Jukka Mäkelä, Mayor of Espoo, the wastewater treatment plant is a good example of cooperation across municipal boundaries. “Studies show that Espoo is the most sustainable city in Europe. This project provides excellent support for the sustainability of the whole Helsinki region and the Baltic Sea,” Mäkelä explains.

The treatment plant will replace the current Suomenoja plant, the capacity of which will not be sufficient for processing the region’s wastewater and treating it according to stricter environmental requirements in the future. By 2040, it is estimated that 150,000 cubic metres of wastewater will flow through the new plant each day.

In addition to its large capacity, the new treatment plant will use the very latest technology. Along with traditional wastewater treatment methods, the facility will also use disc treatment for removing phosphorus and UV treatment to remove microbes. The goal is to treat more than 96 per cent of the phosphorus and organic matter in the wastewater, as well as more than 90 per cent of the nitrogen.

“The Blominmäki plant will achieve by far the best wastewater treatment results in Finland and the entire Baltic Sea region. It will also be the most energy-efficient treatment plant in Finland, and perhaps all of Europe,” says Raimo Inkinen, Executive Director of the Helsinki Region Environmental Services Authority.

“The Blominmäki wastewater treatment plant is a massive project that enables us to use our diverse infrastructure expertise in the areas of engineering and project management, in cooperation with the customer. Both of these areas are among our key strengths, which helps us to ensure the best possible result for the customer,” says Harri Kailasalo, Executive Vice President, Infrastructure projects at YIT.

The company already began its work in Blominmäki in autumn 2015 with the excavation work for the cave system needed for the wastewater treatment plant, totalling around 870,000 solid cubic metres. Approximately 300-metre halls were excavated for the treatment tanks, which are over 20 metres wide and around 22 metres high. In addition, we excavated 17 elevator, ventilation and maintenance shafts, as well as 700 metres of wastewater inflow tunnels.
