LEMMINKÄINEN TO REPAIR AND EXPAND TALLINN AIRPORT’S AIRSIDE AREA
Lemminkäinen and Tallinn Airport Ltd have signed an agreement on repair and expansion work of the airside area at Tallinn Airport. The value of the project is approximately EUR 34.6 million. Construction will begin immediately and the contract will be completed in November 2017.
The contract covers both the planning and the execution of the project, including earthworks and paving along with the reconstruction of storm water systems, as well as the renewal of airport technology, such as airfield ground lighting and navigation systems.
Paved areas of the airport’s airside area will be expanded by 73,490 square metres and the foundation of the existing strip area will be reinforced. Lemminkäinen will also build service roads, areas for snow disposal and de-icing treatment, testing sites for aircraft engines, fire exercise and manoeuvring area for airfield maintenance equipment, as well as concrete pavings and apron stands in the airside area. The most demandig work will involve renewal of the entire paved surface of the runway. It is estimated that 71,000 tonnes of asphalt will be needed and the earthworks will go as deep as 2.5 metres.
“With this project, we will improve the safety of the airport and prepare for an increase in air traffic in the coming decades,” says Einari Bambus, Member of the Board at Tallinn Airport Ltd.
“It is worthwhile to note that Lemminkäinen was the company that renewed the runway at Tallinn Airport during 1994–1995, whereas the runway has remained in excellent condition for over 20 years,” Mr Bambus adds.
“Airports are challenging locations due to safety regulations and the need to ensure smooth traffic during the project, among other things. With regard to paving, there are strict density, stability and wear resistance requirements and we have extensive experience in meeting these requirements at Nordic airports,” says Robert Blumberg, Lemminkäinen.
