Lemminkäinen to excavate an underground wastewater treatment plant in Mikkeli, Finland

LEMMINKÄINEN TO EXCAVATE AN UNDERGROUND WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT IN MIKKELI, FINLAND 

Lemminkäinen and Mikkeli water utility have signed an agreement on the execution of a rock engineering project to build a new underground wastewater treatment plant in Mikkeli, in Eastern Finland. The work will begin in September 2016 and will be completed by the end of June 2018. The value of the contract is EUR 12.3 million. 

The construction contract includes the excavation of the wastewater treatment plant in Metsä-Sairila, rock support works, as well as construction of a drive ramp and concrete structures in the cave. During the project, Lemminkäinen will excavate a total of 160,000 solid cubic metres of rock to make space for the new wastewater treatment plant. 

“The new wastewater treatment plant will be one of the most efficient and modern wastewater treatment plants in Europe. We are happy to have an experienced and reliable rock engineering contractor to execute one of the largest contract entities in the whole project. We believe this to be beneficial for the entire project,” says Reijo Turkki, Director at Mikkeli water utility. 

“The underground wastewater treatment plant will be built next to the waste management station in Metsä-Sairila where, earlier this year, we carried out preliminary works for the excavation project. We will make sure that any disruptions in the operation of the waste management station will be minimised,” says Harri Kailasalo, Executive Vice President Infra projects at Lemminkäinen.
