LEMMINKÄINEN CHOSEN AS CONTRACTOR FOR HELSINKI AIRPORT TERMINAL EXPANSION
Lemminkäinen and Finavia Corporation have signed an agreement on the extension and alteration work for the Helsinki Airport terminal. Construction will start in the autumn 2015 and will be completed in 2020. The gross surface area of contracted work is approximately 75,800 square metres and the cost estimate is EUR 173 million. The new premises will house, for instance, passenger facilities and a separate terminal for apron buses.
The contract will be executed as a cooperative management contract with a target budget. This means close cooperation between the customer, users, planners and builders. As a working environment, the airport is extremely demanding, due to busy air traffic and numerous international safety regulations, for instance. The terminal building will be in use throughout the work, and the aim is to execute the contract so that it has as little effect on the airport’s customer service and the smooth flow of passenger traffic as possible.
“The fact that Lemminkäinen was selected as the contractor is proof of our strong experience and skilled personnel. I believe that in the future similar forms of partnership-based projects will play an increasingly important role in large projects,” says Pauli Mäkelä from Lemminkäinen.
The contract constitutes a significant part of Helsinki Airport’s capacity development project.
“Helsinki Airport is one of the leading airports in Europe when measured in the number of airline passengers heading towards Asia. By expanding the terminal, we will be able to offer them higher quality service and receive larger wide-body aircraft at Helsinki Airport,” says Kari Savolainen, CEO of Finavia.
