LEMMINKÄINEN’S KASTELLI COMMUNITY CENTRE RECEIVES THE RIL PRIZE

The community centre Kastelli, built by Lemminkäinen in Oulu, has been awarded the Finnish Association of Civil Engineers’ annual RIL prize.

The building consists of four blocks and includes a day-care centre, a comprehensive school, an upper secondary school, an upper secondary school for adults, and a library. In addition, the building houses an auditorium, four sports halls and youth facilities. Over 2,000 users visit the premises every day. The total gross area is approximately 24,000 square metres, while the floor area covers nearly 16,000 square metres.

The designs for premises that can be utilised as up-to-date and modifiable learning environments are based on pedagogical expertise.

For the city of Oulu, the community centre is the first building project that has been implemented using the PPP model. The project included the design of the community centre, the demolition of existing buildings on the site and the construction of the community centre. In addition, Lemminkäinen is responsible for the centre’s management, maintenance, user services and contract-based renovation for up to 25 years, until the year 2039.

“Ensuring energy and environmental efficiency was integrated into the project’s planning and implementation right from the first drafts,” states Esa Kemppainen from Lemminkäinen.

The property has been built around solutions that are energy efficient, easily maintained and risk-free and will ensure that life-cycle costs remain small in the future.

The prize was presented by Pekka Soini, Director-General of Tekes (the Finnish Funding Agency for Innovation), who praised the good management of the entire project, which is reflected in the environmental class of the property. Kastelli is the first Nordic school to be awarded the Gold level LEED for Schools certificate.

The RIL award is presented annually by the Finnish Association of Civil Engineers to construction projects whose planning and implementation demonstrate outstanding expertise in construction engineering. Besides technology, the criteria of the award take account of economical, social and environmental considerations. The award has been presented since 1972.
