CONSORTIUM BETWEEN LEMMINKÄINEN AND SKANSKA SIGNS A PRELIMINARY CONTRACT ON THE CONSTRUCTION OF A NEW LOGISTICS CENTRE FOR S GROUP

Freeway, a consortium between Lemminkäinen and Skanska, has signed a preliminary contract with S-ryhmän logistiikkakeskukset Oy (S Group’s logistics centres) for the construction of a new national logistics centre for daily consumer goods in Sipoo to be implemented under a project management contract. Lemminkäinen and Skanska take part in the consortium with even shares.

The logistics centre will have a gross surface area of around 193,000 square metres and a capacity of around 3,400,000 cubic metres. Because of its large scale, the project will be carried out in five overlapping phases. The recently signed preliminary contract covers the implementation of the entire project, but actual construction contracts will be made separately for each phase of the implementation. The construction contract for the first phase is scheduled to be signed in early 2013.

BREEAM (BRE Environment Assessment Method) certification will be applied for the new logistics centre, to be built in northern Sipoo’s Bastukärr. The work is planned to begin in summer 2013, with completion of the contract scheduled for autumn 2018.

In 2010–2012, Lemminkäinen implemented a consumer goods logistics centre for the S Group on the adjacent plot via a project management contract. S Group is one of the oldest groups of cooperative enterprises.

“We are very delighted by this opportunity to continue our good co-operation with S Group. The construction of the consumer goods logistics centre is testimony to our competence,” says Jukka Terhonen, Executive Vice President, Building Construction, Lemminkäinen. “As we also have plenty of experience of co operation with Skanska, forming a consortium for the project with them is easy,” he stresses.

“It is good to have our old partners S Group and Lemminkäinen with us in such a demanding project as this. Preparatory work is already well under way,” says Jarkko Muurimäki, an Executive Vice President of Skanska.
