LEMMINKÄINEN WINS MAJOR INFRASTRUCTURE CONSTRUCTION CONTRACT IN SWEDEN
Lemminkäinen will build a new diversion channel for the Bergeforsen Kraft AB power plant in Timrå, Sweden. The work at the plant will commence in June 2011 and is scheduled for completion at the beginning of 2014. The value of the Lemminkäinen contract is approximately EUR 43 million. If necessary, the new waterway of the plant can be used to effectively decrease the water reserve of the power plant, thereby improving dam safety of the plant water reservoir.
The contract includes demanding civil and foundation engineering, concrete construction and rock and tunnel engineering. For example, the site will be quarried a 60 metre-long tunnel, 450,000 solid cubic metres of open-cut tunnelling, 250,000 solid cubic metres of opencast mining and 15,000m³ of massive reinforced-concrete casts. The new waterway is located in the middle of a built environment; the tunnel will be build under the busy Ådalsbana and the main road 331, spanning over the worksite, will be re-directed.
Bergeforsen Kraft AB is owned by power companies Vattenfall AB and Eon Vattenkraft Sverige AB. The plant, built in 1955, produces an average of 735 gigawatt hours of power annually, and its distribution network covers the Hälsingland province in Central Sweden.
Lemminkäinen has operated on the Swedish infrastructure construction market since the middle of the 1990s. The company is currently working on improving the stability and thus the fire safety of two Eon Vattenkraft Sverige AB’s dams in Ramsele. Nordic infrastructure construction market is one of Lemminkäinen’s strategic growth areas.
