Second architectural competition for the Saukonpaasi residential area in Jätkäsaari is decided

21.1.2010

The second architectural competition for the new Saukonpaasi residential area in the Jätkäsaari district of Helsinki has been decided. Four competing proposals were received for the design of a rental housing site on the corner of Länsisatamankatu and Saukonpaadenranta. The winning proposal was ”Lee” by Arkkitehtiryhmä A6 Oy and LOCI Maisema-arkkitehdit Oy.

The architectural competition was organised by the builder, Lemminkäinen Talo Oy Pääkaupunkiseutu (formerly Oy Alfred A. Palmberg Ab), and the City of Helsinki.

The aim of the competition was to find a high-quality and workable solution for rental housing in which the functional, aesthetic, technical and economic requirements could be resolved in a balanced way. The competition organisers were looking for an economically feasible solution that also met the needs for energy efficiency and ecological sustainability.

The winning proposal ”Lee” complies with the city plan. The façade and back yard sides of the building are clearly contrasted by the choice of materials. Parking has been solved efficiently outside the building frame on two levels that step down to the southeast. The yard on top of the garage roof slab thus opens up naturally to Saukonpaasi Park and the morning sun.

The apartment floor plans are commendable. The frame split by normal floors provides a good starting point for the design and variation of small apartments in terms of average floor area. In the larger apartments on the top floor, a through-building living room, dining area and terrace zone connecting to the frame on both sides of them give the apartments a sense of airiness and clarity. There are 120 apartments in the winning proposal. The construction works are expected to begin in 2010.

The block is located at the end of the Jätkäsaari’s yet-to-be-built Crusell bridge. The plot will be a notable and prominent residential area near the entrance to Jätkäsaari. The plot has 8,800 square metres of building rights.
