Occupational Safety Manager Antti Jokela uses his 10 years of construction site experience to promote health and safety and help others. A skillful occupational health and safety team and YIT employees with a passion for safety issues across the organisation are what drives Jokela in his hectic work schedule.

Hunger for knowledge and the desire to grow professionally can be seen in the career story of Jenni Sorvisto, who started working as Site Manager this year, for the first time during her career.

Visa Myllymäki was captivated by tunnel construction already during his studies. Underground excavation impressed the young man, and now Visa is the leader of the rock engineering operations at YIT in Finland.

When completed, Jokeri Light Rail will relieve crosstown traffic in the Helsinki metropolitan area in Finland and reduce traffic emissions. The extensive construction project is divided into sections. In section 3, Site Engineer Arttu Äikäs, 28, acts as the right-hand man of the Section Manager and orchestrates the project’s schedule and costs. The broad scope of infrastructure construction, the opportunity to solve challenges and working with a great team have kept Arttu at YIT ever since his first summer as a trainee with the company.

“The best career planning is to simply do your job as well as possible,” says Head of Unit Heikki K. Hannukkala, who has 30 years and three segments worth of experience.

Marikki Makkonen, 25, combines her passion for environmental responsibility, construction management system development and the needs of varying infrastructure projects in her work. The competence of a team of specialists from various backgrounds, the creativity needed in the job and a sufficient degree of challenge serve as the driving force for Marikki in developing her skills and her career.

YIT Site Manager Jari Paajanen went from Finnish tunnels to Swedish ones. Paajanen had a hunger for adventure, mulled over the decision for quite a while and, finally, left for Stockholm to build the Henriksdal wastewater treatment plant expansion under the E2 tunnel project.

Large construction projects produce a huge amount of data, but the quality of the data and the capabilities to use it as a data source often leave much to be desired. Mikko Kuusakoski, 35, Head of Data and Analytics at YIT, wanted to question prevailing practices. In his view, project lifecycles should be reviewed across system borders, and data driven management and proactive metrics should be part of everyday business operations. At the same time, he made data his mission in life.

The sea is vast and unknown but, at its best, the diversity, winds and waves can offer a lifelong learning process. This is how two of our water works and shore construction specialists, Construction Manager Urpo Merivirta (61) and Site Manager Jyrki Jussila (28), see the sea. Petri Saarinen has come a long way at YIT, from Foreman to Vice President of Structural Engineering. Saarinen still considers himself a relative newcomer to infrastructure engineering. He enjoys open collaboration with customers on projects, as that makes success taste even sweeter.

For Essi Tuomenoja, who arrived at the construction site of the Helsinki Central Library Oodi as a trainee and left as a supervisor, the construction sector is the most creative of all sectors.
